Garlic is good for you, until it’s not!

Updated: Apr 5, 2022

Studies show that garlic has lots of health benefits. Evidence suggests it boosts the immune system and helps prevent the common cold; contains some essential vitamins and nutrients; helps lower high blood pressure and cholesterol. It contains antioxidants that help prevent Alzheimer’s; reduces fatigue, enhancing athletic performance; and can help with osteoarthritis. And it tastes great! Pretty much a superfood…unless you become allergic

to it!

Garlic is among a number of foods that recent studies have shown can trigger allergic reactions that cause symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, consisting of belly pain and constipation and/or diarrhea. These allergies are detectable by skin patch testing, a test commonly performed by dermatologists and allergists in evaluation of skin rashes. These allergies can develop at any point in a person’s life. While garlic is usually good for you, not so much when you become allergic to it!
